TRAINING MODULE ONE

DEVELOPED BY LR CONSULTING MARY LASATER, ED.D., MARLENE JOHNSON ED.D., AND MARY FITZGERALD, M. ED.

Through self-reflection exercises, Defining the Role of the Paraeducator - Training Module One examines the paraeducator role and shows participants how to use planning forms to proactively discuss and examine expectations, roles and responsibilities with their partner teacher.

Participants learn how to critically examine and build their communication skills with recommended active listening strategies; techniques to handle difficult situations; and introspective, hands-on practice drills.

What's more, paraeducators learn the basics of special education and confidentiality legal issues through interactive exercises and common scenarios, such as how to identify special education acronyms, the essential participants of the IEP team and what student information can and cannot be released.

Each Training Module provides solid instruction on key content knowledge and collaborative skills - so your paraeducators learn how to effectively meet the needs of students with disabilities and, at the same time, receive ongoing training and professional development as required under NCLB and IDEA.

Each Training Module can be used independently or as part of a comprehensive training package and includes:

• A CD-ROM containing participant handouts, as well as overheads and resources
• Suggested timing, content breaks, pacing and activities for a single 6-hour session, two 3-hour sessions or four 1-1/2 hour sessions
• Facilitator tips to create and provide an inviting learning environment along with resources for brushing up on topics, such as glossaries and definitions of must-know legal terms
